This flint lock Jaeger hunting rifle is offered as used, with an additional percussion lock and drum. The rifle is stocked in walnut and trimmed in iron furniture. The stock has been refinished and decorated with nickel silver inlays. The metal furniture has been polished bright and the barrel re-browned after removing the factory markings. The shorter barrel will make this is an ideal rifle for hunting big game in densely wooded or mountainous areas. When shouldered the .54 caliber straight octagon barrel has nice balance with the balance point just behind the ramrod entry pipe. The trigger reach on this rifle is 13-5/8" and the weight is 8.7 pounds. This rifle comes with a leather sling.

The .54 caliber 28" straight octagon barrel makes this rifle feel light and handy. The seven groove barrel is rifled with a 1 in 24" twist for shooting conical bullets. The bore is bright and is ready to shoot, however we note one large size pit near the muzzle. The barrel has been re-browned and all factory markings have been removed. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The back of the sight is painted orange for better visibility. A ghost ring rear sight is dovetailed 4-1/4" ahead of the breech, and has been painted white to contrast the orange on the front sight. We note some small file marks on the top barrel flat near the rear sight.

The straight grain walnut stock has been stripped of its factory varnish and given an oil finish. The stock has been decorated with nickel silver inlays. We note the inlays have some minor inletting gaps and stand proud of the wood. The polished bright iron buttplate is wide and flat for spreading the felt recoil when shooting full loads. All of the factory color case hardening has been removed from the metal furniture. The sliding wooden patchbox door has a small button head spring, lift the spring to open the patchbox to reveal a deep cavity. The door of the patchbox is decorated with a nickel silver fish inlay and has a large notch, for your thumb, to help slide open the patchbox. A diamond inlay is found ahead of the patchbox door and small nickel silver heart inlays on found just behind the lock panels on both sides of the gun. A shield inlay decorates the top of the wrist directly behind the straight tang of the breech plug.

Our bottom view shows the width of the Jaeger buttplate. A long polished bright iron toeplate is fitted to this rifle to prevent chips and dings to the fragile toe area. The polished bright trigger guard is pinned to the stock. A weeping heart inlay can be found just ahead of the triggerguard. A swivel button adorns the bottom of the buttstock. Forward, a sling swivel rests against a ramrod pipe to prevent blocking the ramrod channel. An adjustable brown leather sling is included with this rifle. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a polished bright iron loading tip. The rear brass tip is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The ramrod passes through polished bright iron pipes. A polished iron muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Nickel silver inlays surround the three pins that retain the barrel to the forearm. A beaver tail cheek rest is used on this rifle, typical of those found on European and later American rifles. A nickel silver oval inlay with federal eagle decorates the center of the cheek. Two moon inlays surround the oval inlay. The polished bright sideplate is inlet into the side panel to about one-third depth. The sideplate fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. Two locks retain the lock on the opposite side.

Ignition is provided by this large flint lock by Davide Pedersoli & Co., which appears to be identical to the L&R Classic flint lock, circa 1750. The color case hardening has been removed from the lock. The main spring for the hammer is very strong. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The screw driver slot in the vent shows wear from being removed for the percussion conversion. The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.

This rifle comes with an additional factory percussion lock and drum. This percussion lock is factory color case hardened with grays, blues, and purples. The main spring for the hammer is very strong. A factory percussion drum fitted with a 1/4-28 nipple is also included. The drum shows marring of the flats from being tightened with a wrench.

This short barreled .54 caliber Jaeger rifle will be perfect for the upcoming hunting season. It can be converted between flint and percussion to match your hunting style.
