This used revolver has a few small handling marks. Known as the Whitney 1861 Navy Revolver, the term "Navy" indicates that it is .36 caliber. The famous American gun maker, Eli Whitney, produced this improved percussion revolver during our Civil War era. Notice the solid frame. Unlike the "open top" Colt, this revolver has a solid frame that surrounds the cylinder, for better strength, much like the Remington revolver. This revolver includes a C.S. marked holster.
The .36 caliber 7-1/2' barrel is is marked 1861 E. Whitney .36 caliber on the top flat. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A pointed brass bead front sight is mounted near the muzzle. A notch in the frame, and a matching notch in the hammer, serve as a rear sight. The notch in the hammer and frame are tiny, for those who prefer a fine sight picture. The unique hammer has a lip that extends above the striking face, which helps protect the shooter from cap over spray, another tiny improvement. The side of the frame is concave, to allow easy access while inserting percussion caps on the recessed nipples. Walnut grips are factory varnished to a satin finish, mounted in Remington style, with a blued steel grip screw fitted to inlaid brass escutcheons. The bottom view shows the color case hardened loading lever, and the improvement that Eli Whitney included. Notice the clever toggle link in the loading lever to loading ram joint. The frame is blued steel, and the triggerguard is polished brass. The brass triggerguard has become slightly tarnished from handling. The action is crisp, and the cylinder locks very tight. Trigger release is smooth and as light as the factory dares to make it.
Disassembly for cleaning is even easier than the Remington. Rotate the thumb latch one half turn, at the front center of the frame, to release the loading lever and cylinder pin. The letter "O" is visible on the thumb latch when viewed from above, when open. The retaining screw, on the opposite side, allows you to adjust the tension on the thumb screw, to allow easy use.
This revolver includes a brown leather military style flap holster with C.S. markings on the flap. The holster has scattered rub marks from use. This percussion revolver has been well maintained. It would work well for a Civil War impression, or target shooting. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique
