This longrifle is signed L. Bryner on the barrel and appears to be influenced by examples from Dr James B. Whisker's Gunsmiths of Virginia, and Gunsmiths of West Virginia longrifle books. It features a curly maple stock, straight octagon barrel, brass patchbox, double set triggers, and small Siler flintlock. This rifle has been fired and has a few marks on the frizzen and around the vent. The brass furniture has developed a mellow patina from long storage. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit todays average size shooter. This slender rifle weighs 6.7 pounds.
The .45 caliber barrel is 13/16" straight octagon by 37" long. The bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves and the style of the rifling appears to be from Green Mountain Barrel Company. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The simple fixed rear sight is dovetailed 11" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will generally benefit from the extra distance.
Stocked in curly maple, this flint rifle has attractive figure over the length of the stock. The stock is stained to dark brown with a golden undertone. The buttstock has a slender profile with a early-19th century crescent buttplate to engage the shooters shoulder. Recoil should be very modest with this .45 caliber rifle, making it comfortable to aim and shoot. The buttplate has a brass comb extension that is nicely hand engraved. The four piece brass patchbox is shaped with a decorative head with piercing. The door is cam-over-center spring design. It has a small storage cavity beneath the door. The wrist sweeps up to meet the flared tang. The wrist inlay is engraved R.B.. The triggerguard is a wide early Germanic style with offset grip rail. Forward the ramrod is retained by two forward pipes and one entry pipe, holding the 3/8 wooden ramrod in position. The ramrod has 10-32 threads for accessories. A brass muzzlecap is installed on the rifle to protect the end grain of the wood at the end of the forearm. The side panel is fitted with a surface mounted brass sideplate, with a hand engraved stylized Federal eagle design. The square cheek piece with molded edge has a hand engraved hunter's star.
Sure fire ignition is provided by a small Siler flintlock. The lock has a Germanic influence with a octagon pan and pointed tail with a filed vertical molding. The lock is finished to a dark brown. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English gun flints for use with this lock. The barrel has a direct drilled vent hole and is well positioned and centered on the pan. Double lever double set triggers by R. E. Davis are tuned to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
This longrifle is used with a few marks on it from firing and cleaning. The bore is bright, the lock sparks well, and the double set triggers fire set, or unset.
