This .67 caliber Jaeger rifle is representative of those Germanic rifles which influenced the design of the early American longrifles. This Jaeger, which literally translates to “hunter,” has a large caliber swamped octagon barrel. The walnut stock is trimmed in iron furniture with a patina finish. Jaeger style double lever double set triggers are mated to an early Germanic style flint lock by Jim Chambers. This rifle is offered as new, with a bore that is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 7.5 pounds.

The swamped octagon barrel is 28-1/2" long. The barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The .67 caliber bore is straight rifled with eight lands and radius bottom grooves cut by Ed Rayl. The muzzle is coned to allow thumb starting a ball without the use of a short starter. The bore is bright and clean. The barrel is finished to a lightly textured patina finish. A flat top rear sight with long decorative finial is dovetailed 7-1/4" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade set in an iron base dovetailed directly behind the muzzle. A small brass bead has been soldered to the top of the sight. The breech end of the barrel is decoratively filed with a border design, and the tang is lightly engraved. Two filed bands decorate the muzzle end of the barrel. The top flat is signed D. K. Minnich behind the rear sight.

This rifle is stocked in walnut finished to a medium brown with satin sheen. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the recoil of the .67 caliber bore. The buttplate has a long decorative comb engraved with two entwined serpents. The nickel silver thumbpiece has a shield with a crown shape. Incised carving surrounds the flared tang of the breech plug. The comb of the buttstock has a pronounced step and is highlighted with raised carving as it transitions into the wrist. The buttstock is fitted with a sliding wood patchbox, another feature common to German rifles. The door is shaped with a bullet shaped nose and molding along the edge and inset bone inlay. Compress the button in the center toward the door lid to allow the door to slide to the rear. Beneath the door is a large cavity for storing loading and cleaning accessories, and it contains a homemade worm, ballpuller, jag and fouling scraper, along with a combination pick and brush. The worm, scraper, and ball puller are each screwed into the bottom of the patchbox opening to prevent them from rattling around. A line of incised carving runs along the toe line of the buttstock and continues further up the stock to surround the triggerguard with long decorative finial.

The buttstock is shaped with a square toe, and fitted with a sling swivel button. The forward swivel correctly rests against the middle ramrod pipe to prevent the swivel from blocking the ramrod channel. A maroon colored adjustable jute sling is sewn around the sling swivels. The Jaeger style iron triggerguard is mounted with a combination of screw and pin. The forearm is decorated with raised carving that transitions into a molding line that runs along bottom and top of the forearm before flowing back to highlight the lock panels. The ramrod entry pipe is shaped with a short tapered skirt and the end has a crenelated appearance. The two forward ramrod pipes have the same shape. The tapered wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The muzzle end of the ramrod is fitted with a turned bone tip. The ramrod is decorated with a barber pole design. The poured pewter tip protects the end grain of the stock. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek. The cheek is flanked with raised carving on either side of the cheek piece. The side panel is fitted with a large iron side plate. Two large domed head lock bolts pass through the stock to engage the lock on the opposite side.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by a Jim Chambers’ Christians Spring flint lock. The lock has the same patina finish to match the barrel and is lightly engraved on the plate and cock. Notice the early style frizzen pivot screw, a stud mounted without a pan bridle. The fancy flash pan has an octagon shape, surrounded by a molding below, as it joins the plate. This flint lock is fast, with a strong mainspring, and it sparks well. Order a dozen of our best English #Flint-ENG-7 gun flints, 7/8" size for best sparks.

The distinctive Jaeger style double set triggers can be fired from the set or unset position. You may cock the lock or set the trigger in any order. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Fast ignition is assured by the steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
