This is the Buffalo Hunter, a replica of the frontier rifle made from the famous U.S. Model 1863 contract musket by Remington. This used rifle is trimmed in brass furniture with patchbox. The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight with a step adjustable rear sight. The stock has numerous handling marks from use. The bore is bright, but has scattered pitting running its entire length. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.3 pounds.

The .58 caliber tapered round 25 inch barrel is rifled with three equal lands and grooves, exactly like the original. Nicely polished and blued, the blue finish has speckling and pits running along its entire exterior. The bore is bright, but has scattered pitting running along its entire length. Made by Antonio Zoli, this famous gun maker's name is marked in small letters at the breech and the Italian proof marks are on the side flat on the breech, along with the caliber and black powder warning. The barrel is retained with a single bolt that passes through the rounded tang, and a wedge key through the forearm.

The beech halfstock is fitted with brass furniture that has developed a mellow patina from use. The beech stock is stained and finished to a light brown. The stock has many handling marks and two larger dents are found along the toe line. The wrist is checkered to provide a secure grip. The checkering shows a few dents and dings from handling. The brass patchbox is retained with three blued steel screws, as original. The bow of the triggerguard is fitted with a loop for a sling swivel, the bow is positioned backwards on this example. No forward swivel is mounted, as is typical for this model. The brown synthetic ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-29-10 to better service this rifle. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet flush into the stock, and counter bored to accept the two lock bolts.

The eagle stamp is faint on the lock plate, nearly obscured by the bright color case hardened finish of the lock. The lock plate is marked with the name NAVY ARMS Co along the lower edge. The lock works crisply, and provides fast and reliable ignition. The breech plug bolster is threaded with a bronze nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. We can supply the 5/16-24 nipples #MMS-I for musket caps, at a small extra cost, so you may shoot both types of percussion caps. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.

This Buffalo Hunter rifle will be perfect for your next big game hunt and will be a handy rifle to carry in the deep woods. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
