This .40 caliber percussion Target Pistol is stocked in a beautiful piece of curly maple that has been finished a warm brown with golden undertones. The gun is built with French styling, and a man-sized grip. The bore is bright, but does have a few minor light pits near the muzzle. This pistol is fitted with an L&R percussion lock and single set trigger. We note that the lock can be fired from the half-cock position when the trigger is unset. This pistol includes a loading/cleaning rod with .40 caliber jag, and a homemade loading stand.
The .40 caliber 10" rifled bore has six equal sized lands and grooves with a fast twist for shooting patched roundball. The bore is bright, but we note a few scattered minor pits near the muzzle. We could not feel these pits when we ran a tight fitting cleaning patch down the bore. The barrel is finished to a smooth even chocolate brown. The finish has a few light scratches and bright spots from normal cleaning and use. A browned iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed on the top of the breech plug to maximize the sight radius, for best accuracy. A single bolt passes through the short straight tang to engage the trigger plate below. A small steel pin retains the barrel to the forearm. No rib, ramrod pipes, or ramrod are fitted to this gentleman's target pistol.
The L&R Bailes percussion lock is finished brown to match the barrel. The drum is well supported and is fitted with a stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. A brass flash cup surrounds the nipple to direct the cap flash up and away from the wood around the breech. The single set trigger is double phase, it will fire the lock, set or unset. Push the trigger forward until it latches to set the trigger. The trigger adjustment screw directly behind the trigger controls the engagement in the set position. We note the lock can be fired from the half-cock position when the trigger is unset.
